Finding Flag Fen 1300BC

Posted on: 15/09/2025

This September, Flag Fen Archaeology Park will become the focus of an exciting archaeological project designed to reveal the hidden landscape beneath its internationally important Bronze Age monument.

From 15 September to 3 October 2025, archaeologists from the Cambridge Archaeological Unit will lead a 55-hectare auger survey. The work will be the most comprehensive attempt yet to reconstruct the ancient topography of the Flag Fen Basin, using 235 auger points and targeted test pits.

Public engagement is at the heart of the project. The expects are working with local volunteers and the Young Archaeologists’ Club, giving them the opportunity to join fieldwork, while a series of events — including live demonstrations and a post-survey public talk — will share discoveries with the wider community. More details will be confirmed soon.

Why is this important?

Although Flag Fen’s iconic timber posts have been studied for over 40 years, the surrounding landscape is still poorly understood. By mapping the ancient ground surface and deposits, archaeologists can finally place the monument within its full prehistoric context — and ensure it is managed and preserved for the future.
