Flag Fen Archaeology Park came alive over the May Bank Holiday weekend as the Battle of Ringmere 1010 – Viking Festival returned with an unforgettable roar! With a record-breaking attendance of approximately 3,000 visitors, the event proved to be a spectacular success, captivating audiences of all ages.
From Saturday 3 May to Monday 5 May, over 380 Viking re-enactors from across the UK descended upon Peterborough to recreate the legendary Battle of Ringmere – and they did not disappoint. The dramatic daily re-enactments thrilled crowds, as the Anglo-Danish forces led by Ulfcytel clashed against Thorkell the Tall’s Viking warriors in a stunning display of historical warfare. Swords clashed, shields slammed, and spectators were transported back to the year 1010 in a truly immersive experience.
But the festival was much more than just battle scenes. Visitors explored an authentic Viking encampment, engaged with traditional crafts like metalworking, woodworking, and weaving, and gained fascinating insights into Viking life.
Hands-on activities kept families entertained all weekend, with archery, axe-throwing, and weapons demonstrations drawing in families and enthusiastic cheers. Living history displays, storytelling, and educational talks added depth and richness to the experience, making it both exciting and educational.
Thanks to the energy of the re-enactors, the dedication of the Flag Fen team, and the enthusiasm of thousands of visitors, the Viking Festival at Flag Fen will be remembered as one of the standout events of the year.
