Fen to Fire, an immersive digital art installation reconstructing the 3,000 year old Must Farm settlement, comes to Flag Fen.

Fen to Fire is produced by Collusion in partnership with Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU), with thanks to funders Arts Council England, Collections, Connections, Communities (CCC), and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research.

This September, Flag Fen Archaeology Park welcomes Fen to Fire, an immersive digital art installation that brings the Late Bronze Age Must Farm settlement back to life — just a few miles from where it once stood.

Created by digital artist Guy Schofield with young people from Cromwell Community College, Chatteris, Fen to Fire uses 3D modelling, motion capture and AI to reconstruct life on the Must Farm settlement in extraordinary, photorealistic detail. A multi-screen installation immerses visitors in the daily rhythms of the site, from its construction to its dramatic destruction by fire almost 3,000 years ago. Using AI, every life cycle of the site is different, with activities, people, weather and viewpoints changing, meaning no two visits are ever the same.

What is Must Farm?

Sometimes called the "Pompeii of the Fens", Must Farm near Whittlesey is one of Britain's most extraordinary archaeological discoveries. Excavated by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU), the site revealed a cluster of perfectly preserved Bronze Age roundhouses built on stilts above a river, destroyed by fire and preserved beneath the silt for millennia — along with an astonishing range of finds including textiles, tools, weapons and even bowls of food. Through cutting-edge digital technologies, visitors can experience what life at Must Farm might have been like thousands of years ago.

Visiting Fen to Fire

Fen to Fire is Free to view in our Visitor Centre, Open Wednesday - Sunday, 10am - 4pm.

Simply drop into the Visitor Centre during opening hours and discover Fen to Fire, an engaging installation exploring the world of Must Farm. Want to explore Flag Fen Archaeology Park too? Admission fees apply to enter the park, where you can discover a recreated Bronze Age roundhouse, complete with wattle fencing, immersing you further in the world of Must Farm. Once inside, you can spend as long as you like exploring the site.

Visitors can experience the full installation, comprising the main digital artwork alongside interpretation and behind-the-scenes films offering a window into both the Bronze Age world and the creative process behind the work.
